How to Stick To Your Goals This Year

How to Stick To Your Goals This Year

We all know firsthand how hard sticking to our goals can be. Whether it’s going to the gym more often, eating healthier, saving money or going for a walk every day.

Usually, in the beginning we are motivated and we are crushing our goals. Then a couple of weeks go by, life happens, and those goals suddenly don’t seem so appealing anymore. It's been pouring down for days on end, and Netflix and chocolate sounds much better than a walk. You have been working late all week, and picking up something on your way home is much easier than going to the grocery store and cooking a healthy, homemade meal. In other words, the honeymoon phase is over.

Don’t beat yourself up if this has happened to you. We have all been there. However, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success so you can stick to your goals.

Make a plan

Simply writing your goals down is not enough. You have to make a plan of how you’re going to achieve your goals. Let’s say your goal is to cook a homemade meal every night, but you know you work late most days and you won’t be home until 7 PM. Chances are you will already be starving by the time you get home and you are too hungry and tired to cook. A plan could be to meal prep every Sunday afternoon so you can have your dinner ready in 15-20 minutes.

If your plan is to eat healthier but you find yourself reaching for those cookies at work every afternoon because you have a rumbling tummy, a plan could be to always have healthy snacks (like our amazing bars and Plantshakes) at your desk so you always have a nutritious alternative on hand.

Stop making excuses

Oftentimes we are our own worst enemy. This might sound a little harsh, but at the end of the day you have to get out of your own way and stop making excuses for why you shouldn’t do things. Of course sometimes life happens, but if you find yourself constantly making up excuses for why you shouldn’t go on that daily walk (or whatever your goal is), it’s time to stop making excuses.

Give it time

For something to become a habit you have to commit to it for 21 straight days. Once it has become a habit, keep up the good work for another 90 days and then it’s no longer just a habit: It’s a lifestyle. That’s almost four months you have to do something for it to become fully integrated in your life. So give it time - it will get easier.

Get support

If you are struggling with your goals it might be a good idea to get support from a coach, a friend or a family member. Having an ‘accountability partner’ is a huge help when it comes to achieving your goals!

Have fun

Lastly, remember to have fun! If you want to eat healthier choose foods that you love. If you don’t like broccoli, don’t eat it. If you love peaches, eat an abundance of peaches. If you want to go on daily walks listen to audiobooks or podcasts you find inspiring while walking. Or make a plan to walk with a friend a couple of times a week.

We would like to leave you with these wise and inspiring words from Mahatma Gandhi:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.”

Love,
